Russian born, Viktor Bout, nicknamed the "merchant of death" has been arrested in a luxury hotel in Bangkok. Mr Bout is touted as being one of the worlds biggest illegal arms dealers.
It is believed that Mr Bout was arrested while selling weapons in a DEA special operations unit sting.
Thai police were acting on a US issued warrant for supplying arms to Columbian rebels.
"We have followed him for several months. He just came back to Thailand today," Gen Pongpat said. "We will take legal action against him here, before deporting him to face trial in another country, likely the US."
The US embassy in Bangkok applauded the Thai police on the arrest.

Buster Martin, a working plumber, competed in the Roding Valley half marathon in Essex in just over 5 hours, and is now focused on London's 26-mile marathon event.
Amazingly, on finishing the Roding Valley half marathon, Buster said, "Where's my beer?"
101-year old Buster Martin, completed the course in 5 hours 13 minutes, including a "comfort break", a bacon sandwich and a couple of "beer breaks" on the way round.
Buster, who has 17 children to date, started work as a plumber three years ago because he said he was bored.
Buster, a London resident, created headlines in 2007 when he signed up with men's magazine FHM, providing guidance to the younger generation.
Mr Martin also found popularity when The Zimmers(rock band), scored a hit single last year with a cover of The Who's, My Generation.

The commercial court of Blantyre, Malawia, yesterday sentenced a businessman, Patrick Murama, to 20 years hard labor.
The court was told that Murama had paid a co-accused, known as Chakwamba, to cut of the 14-year-old boys genitals. Murama wanted the genitals for witchcraft rituals. Malawians' believe, rightly of wrongly, that the use of genitals in rituals will make them rich.
The teenager, obviously, has been left disfigured, even after an attempt to do reconstructive surgery, and not to mention being traumatised from the vicious attack.
